The Origin Of Experience: The Shaping Of Sense And The Complex World
An IASE Outreach Weekend Workshop
The IASE Scientific Mission is to unify a theory of sense with other theories of nature. The Engineering Mission is to develop technologies based upon successful theories. Our topics include:
- Taking Experience Seriously
- The Characterization of Sensory Experience
- Why Senses Fail
- Computing With Structure
- Machines That Experience
- Awakening Machine Intelligence
Dr. Steven Ericsson-Zenith begins by asking how we can know anything at all given the rejection of absolutes in science. We then explore science as the art of thinking about existence and focus upon two fundamental questions:
- How do sentient individuals come to be in the world?
- How do these individuals operate and what role do senses play?
The workshop ends with an exploration of possible new technologies and the broader implications of the work. The Institute for Advanced Science & Engineering (IASE) Outreach Series of Courses and Workshops for a General Audience presents “The Origin Of Experience” with Dr. Steven Ericsson-Zenith, author of Explaining Experience In Nature and The Origin Of Experience (forthcoming).
Dr. Ericsson-Zenith is a computational theorist and logician. His current research seeks to explain the mechanics of biophysical behavior and sense. He will be presenting his ideas at the 2011 Supercomputing Disruptive Technologies Exhibit and the Isaac Newton Institute for the Mathematical Sciences “Incomputable” event in June 2012. He is currently organizing the conference “Challenging Turing 2012” at Stanford University.
